hm it could not really reproduced the issue however if you have such problems its due to the rendering of the broweser.
Obviously you could reduce the number of curve points but given the amount of problems you have I suppose you have really difficult data large gaps, many points, some points very close togehter ...
So I think there is no ONE correct number of curve points for your data. The best solution for you would proably be to make the spacing between virtual points more dynamic such that things like "20 points between two real data points" would be possible. (The current approach is more like a virtual point all x space units). If you want to create something like this it would certainly be a great addition to the curved line plugin!
Alternatively you could try to find a heuristic that determines a good curve point factor for your data....
Sorry that I can't give you more help but I think the "dumb" estimate with the curve point factor might just not be good enough for your data.
