I was not aware of the prior valgrind run. no need to run it again. above trace is already sufficient and shows the issue.

@x42 thanks. The prior run was from quite a while ago; I have fixed some of the problems it reported, and the line numbers don't correspond to the latest code, so it would probably be helpful to do a new run on the latest version.
