Aaaand, actually that change causes trouble elsewhere. Any idea what the best approach would be?

As it is, if I pass an external_endpoint it is appended like /l/i/n/k.

The extra_endpoints parameter expects an iterable. Pass in a tuple or a list with a single element. That should do the trick.
