That version of node is pretty old and will be unsupported as of 2018. I think that the issue is that the ...args syntax is not supported for Node v4. Could you try upgrading your node version?

npm: 3.5.2
node:4.2.6
Note, I'm doing this on Ubuntu 16.04.
node on Ubuntu is from nodejs-legacy, and is a symlink to nodejs from the
nodejs 4.2.6 package.

Thanks.... that was, indeed, the problem. Updating to the latest Node packages from Artful resolved the build issues.
