I've added AV1 with the guidelines from here. https://trac.ffmpeg.org/wiki/Encode/AV1
To access it, select mkv from the Format Container dropdown.
I moved the Video Codec dropdown menu to the Video tab, so there's less having to switch tabs.
AV1 can use Speed settings -cpu-used in the Format tab.
To update to the latest version just press the update arrow button on Axiom. It will ask for admin confirmation if the exe is in Program Files.

wow, you're amazing, thank you so much. I hope a gpu encoder for this comes
soon, it's a slow nightmare to encode right now, as amazing as it is.
There's also the av1 image format container as well which would be nice to
be able to export in the future.

I don't know of one myself -
The only documentation I know of at the moment is
https://aomediacodec.github.io/av1-avif/ from what I understand they work
just like HEIF/webp . There's some contention on if avif should also use
webp extension as well, (at least with doom9's userbase), but as av1 is
intended as a replacement for vp9 so I personally I think it would be fine.
in addition, even daala does an amazing job but with way lower support of
course.

Xiph is involved in the development of an accelerated encoder for AV1 and
seems invested in this feature too, so following their development would
probably lead us in the right direction.
In addition I think you can also output from AV1 to a webp container. In fact, it might just be an extension rename, lol.

I will plan on adding webp with -vcodec libwebp, but what is the avif codec for FFmpeg? Is it just libaom-av1 in a webp container?
Also I have released a new version with some new features and fixes.

It seems the latest build for libaom encodes multi-threaded, which is great.
I'm attempting to encode a equirectangular video at 4096x2048 with the latest build that includes ffmpeg, there may be an issue with AV1 in that version. I'll be sure to try it with the nightly.
In any case, I'm currently getting "output file is empty nothing was encoded"
and it seems to be stuck right about here. I'm about to leave the office, so I'll leave this running.

update: still stuck, had an update for frame 134 but it stopped. I'll try the new nightly.
New nightly seems to progress but with single core mode enabled.
