Although I thought I'd like this, I'm not sure now. I looked at how the web client does this and it sends typing notifications, but it sends them repeatedly rather than sending one when typing begins and one when typing ends (i.e. clear the editor or send message). This explains the brittle client-side UX where the typing messages disappear and reappear while someone else is typing. (In other words, they time out and have to be refreshed.) This is terrible enough that I don't even want our client to participate until the protocol is improved.
