Progress update:
We now have indicators for normal and DM channels with unread messages. Right now it's a boolean indicator (nothing for no unread and ! for unread). There is also a bug in the current behavior where messages that arrive while the channel is focused (including your own posts) cause the indicator to appear when you move away from that channel. Revisiting the channel makes the indicator go away.

I believe the changes @aisamanra made yesterday fixed this. Please reopen if you notice any new edge cases or wonky behavior.

I've noticed a new bug with this. When matterhorn starts up it dumps you into town-square. If you have new messages in town-square and you move away, then town-square will still show as having new messages. I believe this only happens on startup.
