That's a really cool feature that I didn't know docker hub had, thanks for the pointer.

It looks like you could set up a tagged build pretty easily per the instructions here, at least for simple MAJOR.MINOR.PATCH tags, and then whenever you pushed up a tag to this repo the docker image would get tagged for you.

Sounds reasonable. I basically just enabled automated build in hub.docker.com for this github repository. As long as it's doable with automated builds I'm happy to look into it.

Yes, I strongly prefer images w/ automated build on hub because I want to exactly know how each image i'm using was created and that's a great way of ensuring nothing fishy is inside the image.
