@mivok I think this is a personal preference, but I actually want the exact opposite: Enforce that the ordered list starts at 1. and increments at each list item.

The rationale in the style guide does make sense for me to some degree, but I don't like how the raw markup looks as for me it breaks one of Markdown basic tenets - that content should be readable even without rendering (I know it's not totally unreadable, but when I refer to item nr 5 and the list entries are all 1 I need to count the entries in my head etc.). Additionally, using 1 everywhere makes it a tad bit easier to forget to update references when adding a new list item in-between. When I'm forced to modify the following items I'm more likely to remember I need to update references as well.

Maybe an option for MD029 that controls the behavior?

That sounds like a good idea. I've reopened this issue to add in the option to have sequential numbering.
