We have not seen this in a long time indeed, the closest issue I can think of is #96 but that is quite specific to old phones and planet imagery. I think we will go through a big round of closing issues when we merge the dev branch into master, probably in the coming few days

I managed to resolve this for my own case by:

  • Uninstalling Mapswipe
  • Re-installing it
  • Logging in again

I'm still curious about what could have caused this and whether there are better ways to fix it. What I did above is basically the "nuclear option" when it comes to fixing apps and isn't always great.

Hi Cass,

Glad you were able to resolve, though I agree that it's not ideal that you had to do it that way!

Question: are you trying to create your own instance of MapSwipe, or is this issue for the currently deployed version? This particular repo (yourmapswipe-react-native-app) is normally a resource for people trying to spin up their own instance of MapSwipe. If you are a developer looking to create your own instance, we'd love to be in touch to see if we can help one another.

Just FYI; the current deployed version of MapSwipe was originally developed as a prototype. We didn't have the funding to build a proper application, so we built what was essentially a proof of concept with a mix of underpaid and purely volunteer labour. That prototype has now been deployed and is being used extensively. This is great, of course, but we really need to get more funding and/or very serious, highly-skilled volunteer developers to turn it into something more robust.

We're working on it! In the meantime, we're glad to have the feedback, and hopefully can address some of the bugs, but most of us are currently stuck doing jobs and can't put the time into MapSwipe that we'd like to. Please bear with us.

Thanks for the note @ivangayton! I completely understand as I've maintained projects on the side in addition to my day job.

To answer your question, this is on the deployed version, installed from the Google Play store.

I asked on Twitter and TheMissingMaps replied that this was as good a place as any to report an issue with the current deployed app. Is there a better place to report an issue? (There was a Google form linked at the bottom of the FAQ but the tone of it sounded more like app feedback rather than issue reporting.)

I'd love to take a look at this and perhaps try it out. I'll reach out to you outside of this issue for more information.

Thanks!

Just as another datapoint, similar issue here. Using Cyanogenmod based on Android 4.4.4 (yeah time to upgrade, long story).

I first tried diving right in, and it had some missing tiles on almost every page, and often more than one per page. It gets rather tedious to tap 3 times on each of those tiles, and feels bad to leave it to other volunteers just because the tiles didn't load.

Then I tried offline'ing an area, which took a while and then broke completely. After the download was complete, none of the tiles showed up. I tried the "clear project data" button as well which did nothing for me either.

Not sure a new app is really necessary (rewriting always takes a lot of effort and this one is good looks-wise), if the app could only check "oh did that tile load? No? Let's default to triple-tapped and retry in the meantime."

'Bad imagery' is meant for cloud cover, distortion, or other problems with the tile. It's not for a tile that fails to load.

Can this be closed yet? I've done a lot of swiping and have never dealt with a tile that didn't load within 20 seconds, and most are instant. These problems sound like caching or network issues, not problems within the app.

As someone who previously commented here, sure, this can be closed by now. If nobody reported this anymore since August 2017, then either it fixed itself or nobody is encountering it anymore.

Closing as this is very outdated. There are other more specific issues related to imagery not loading, which we'll use to follow up
