This is a good idea, but may have some unintended consequences, for instance:

  • People accidentally putting an expiration date in the past on e-mails
  • Timezone-related problems (manageable)
  • People editing e-mails received and adding backdated expiration dates in order to provide "evidence" that they never saw an e-mail
  • Malicious attackers injecting expiration dates in the past into e-mails.

... I think none of these are really dealbreaker problems, but should be taken care of sensibly.

+1 but without any automatic deletion. Tagging with "old" might be an idea.

Adding a feature like this to the UI is tantamount to lying to the user, because we imply that the e-mail they are composing will expire - which is not a featured supported by any existing e-mail standards.

So in reality this won't work UNLESS the recipient is also running Mailpile, which will for the forseeable future be a miniscule minority of cases. And even if we only display this when the recipient is running Mailpile, we'll still be lying because their mail server won't respect it and they may also use other mail clients which don't respect it.

So in short, this CANNOT work, and since I am strongly opposed to lying to our users I veto features like this. :-)
