This is already built in.

you can select multiple images with CTRL or SHIFT depending of the kind of selection, then by doing right click you have the possibility to move them to another album or to a new one.

Don't worry about missing the multiselect -- I didn't discover it until I started contributing code to Lychee 😉. What can I say, our documentation needs improvements.

As to your question, Lychee doesn't let you do what you want in one operation -- the newly created album is always a subalbum of the current one. However, you can either create a new top-level album before the move operation, or you can move the newly created subalbum to the top level after the move operation.

There does appear to be a bug, however, that the subalbum created during the move operation is not displayed -- one has to manually reload the album. We need to fix that part for sure, so I'm reopening this issue so that we don't forget.
