The device was reported by a user to work. Did you install the correct serial
driver for your device? It could be the FTDI VPC one from
http://www.ftdichip.com/Drivers/VCP.htm

I have indeed installed that serial driver. The results are the same. Is there
a better device that you would recommend?

You should check which entry is added on connecting the device (press "Refresh
Information" in the menu File men) to the Hardware>>USB entry of the "System
Information.app" (open via Apple menu, "About this Mac"). The corresponding
entry could give you an idea of which serial driver is needed. Maybe that
device does not come with a FTDI chipset.

The Phidgets 1048 is the most interesting device to be used with Artisan. It is
powered by USB, supports 4 channels and is directly communicating via USB
instead of some serial-over-USB, so it is fast.

Please report.

Based on your instructions, I installed the following drivers found at
https://www.silabs.com/products/mcu/Pages/USBtoUARTBridgeVCPDrivers.aspx

Unfortunately, as you'll note in the screenshot, it gives me the same error. I
truly appreciate the help and speedy response to this issue. I hope there is a
way to resolve it!

This looks promising. The driver seems to be correctly installed and the serial
port got created on plug-in of the device to the USB port. Just the device does
not send any data out. Did you long-push the “PC-Link” button to turn
communication on as advised in the manual?

So I close this as "invalid" as there was no program error. Hope this issue and
its resolution can still help others.
