Ah, I see. Schematics are actually NBT data zipped up in a gzip. Linux determines file types from magic numbers and file extensions aren't typically used much. The file is a valid schematic and renaming the file with a .schematic suffix should fix this issue. You shouldn't try to unzip it, any application reading the file will unzip it itself. That being said, some applications may rely upon an explicit file extension so I'll push a commit to add one soon.
