note: error like WebSocket connection to 'wss://139.144.96.196:5000/socket.io/?EIO=4&transport=websocket' failed: was also encountered in production when trying to access the site from https://___.com but it worked when directly from https://139.144.96.196, so needed to add that domain to corsWhitelist, or update CSP in nginx config, or the socketEndpoint in sketches.js.

also if changes were made and the server was restarted, it would show this error for a few minutes but then go away, likely because of cache or waiting for old ssl cache to clear.... nginx needs to be restarted too

note, have to be careful with environment variables in .env like REACT_APP_WSS=true, since it's a string in the code, so would test truthy with REACT_APP_WSS === 'true'.
also server.js needs to listen on localhost in development not HOST_PROD
