Update - I'm actually able to build in spite of that error. Should I be worried?

Is your user actually in the wheel group? OS X typically uses staff in place of wheel.

:+1. wheel is root's group. I'd say you have sudo-installed emacs (or something else) that interfere with brew's expectation that /usr/local is owned by your-uid:staff. Also, check brew doctor, in case it spots something related.
