Kyle Ries header image for GitHub README. Software Analytics and Data Engineer

I'm Kyle (he/him), a 10 year veteran of software and data engineering. I'm well versed in Python, SQL, and Ruby (if you recently had trouble installing dbt on a Mac, I fixed it for you! šŸ˜„ )

šŸ” Iā€™m currently working on a Singer.io tap for the Energy Administration Information public data to quickly and easily move data from their API to your target of choice.

Data Engineering

I recently fixed dbt installations on Mac.

I built a data warehouse for my previous company with:

How did it go?

I believe what sets me apart from my peers in the engineering space is a strong "customer sense". I can wield the tools to yield the results:

Software Engineering

I don't have much of a public record of software engineering work, so I like to participate in the annual Advent of Code challenges.

In 2022, I chose Python for the event. In 2021 and 2020, I chose....SQL! I wanted to challenge myself to think about the problems from more of a relational point of view and see how far I could get without resorting to a full programming language.

Analysis

I've also worked in the pure analyst capacity (and, anecdotally, I can't fully express how empowering it is to be able to handle all of the engineering required to build a data product and then immediately begin using it to solve a business problem or illuminate an opportunity). I've diagnosed structural problems in business lines by formulating business equations and predicted the presence of certain appliances using metered energy consumption using machine learning on an "Enterprise" scale.

Leadership/Mentoring

I've mentored and led both software and data engineering teams. "Measuring" results is my instinct, and the best measure I've found is to keep tabs on those I've mentored/led. In short, they get hired/promoted to the roles they aspire to. I've advised/supported a Product Manager on a journey to the C-Suite. I've supported the development of an entry level Ruby on Rails engineer into a technical lead/owner of a major SaaS company. I've mentored a non-analyst into a Lead Analyst through active coaching and training.
