The real problem here though, is that the login API now returns HTTP 409, instead of 201. So something has changed.
Looking at other bots/apis for Ogame, this seems to be caused be a requirement to fill in a captcha. Probably to prevent bots.
Any ideas on how we can overcome this?

I’ve started looking at alternatives instead. Logging into the game via browser, and then running this bot again made it work without problems. It just needs the cookies to be present it seems.

A quick search suggests various means to pass it using machine learning, voice recognition, and other means. It seems a tad excessive, in my opinion. Pratik Dani solution seems more manageable , using Selenium.

This probably happened with one of the later updates to Ogame. I'm facing problems during login as well.

I'm not able to replicate your results when I log in, neither using Chrome or Firefox. Did you do something particular to accomplish this?
Also, the Gameforge Token appears to be valid for about a month's worth of time.
