Slope effects outline
What I see / compare are now outlined in rough thesis document.
Explain/Discussion (what may be causing this):
- Wunsch chapter 2 'critical layers'
- Nearby stratification changes little below about -150 m, data WKB scaled, but doesn't account for slope effects.
- Identify critical frequency for slope below the Upper Slope ADCP. Guessing subcritical for subdiurnal, K1, and f (based on CCW/upward reflection), and supercritical for M2 and continuum (based on CW/downward reflection).
- Evanescent (subdiurnal and diurnal are both sub-inertial) internal waves locally generated from 'rubbing' subdiurnal currents and barotropic diurnal tides incident with the subcritical upper-slope (radiate upwards) (Hotchiss & Wunsch, Polzin, Kunze, Cummins).
- Poleward diurnal CTW from Juan de Fuca may induce similar effects (along-slope diurnal forcing over slope topography).
- Thomson et al., 1990. Critical layer attenuation of downward near-inertial motions as they are absorbed by increased vertical shear in the background flow due to bottom-trapped oscillations over ridge topography.
- Increased stratification effects near areas of high 'topographic relief', such as the shelf-break and slopes. These highly stratified turbulent layers experience the effects of reflection/scattering and internal tide and lee-wave generation. May amplify internal waves and tides, in general.
- Discuss strengths and weaknesses of each theory.
