The tricky part with using the previous result for subsequent filtering, is that the input string can be edited in different ways that make the previous result irrelevant. For example when using<del>
<bs>
<c-w>
... in the middle of the previous string. So after a number of searches, there'll be nothing left to search.

Closing this as the logic has actually already been used (although differently) and only triggered when the number of items found is less than max_height.
