what do you have in /etc/elasticsearch on your host machine?
which operating system are you using?

Hera are the contents after running the docker-compose up:

[root@host docker-elasticsearch]# ls /etc/elasticsearch
elasticsearch.yml  log4j2.properties  searchguard
[root@host docker-elasticsearch]#

Relating to OS, I'm on CentOS 7, here are the details:

a default file was missing from the repo. I fixed it and successfully run it.
