I did another check just with the example above, (fixed the naming issue), and you're right of course! Not sure what I've done in the other project that got me confused.. Sorry about that :) I'll see if i can reproduce my issue that got me thinking it didn't work in the first place.

I assume page_parent should call page_grand_parent rather than itself, but other than that I don't see a problem? Using a variable when calling a template should not be a problem.
