The first two questions that come to mind:
- Are these environments using Node.js 0.8+?
- Do they allow native modules? (node-gyp is used to compile native modules, if it's not there, maybe it was intentionally removed.)

- yes its currently 0.6.20 but u can actually specify a version
- i couldn't find out
- do you have experience deploying to cloud PaaS?

The first time I tried to push to my Heroku server the compilation failed, second time worked. Seems like it may be a sporadic issue where some of the Heroku machines have something others don't.
