Julia IO objects are converted (for passing to Python) into objects that implement the Python RawIOBase interface. This interface, as I understand it, returns bytearray objects from read operations.
It looks like pickle might be expecting an object that implements the TextIOBase interface, i.e. which returns strings from read operations?

This should be fixed now, if you change your code to:
test = p.load(PyTextIO(infile))
