From @nornagon:

To clarify: this change is to make 'insert' and 'delete' be operations, and to infer what they act on by context?

i.e. {p:[0], i:['asdf']} inserts into a list, {p:[0], i:'asdf'} inserts into a string, and {p:['hi'], i:'asdf'} inserts into an object?

That seems ... confusing.

There's obviously disagreement on how the behaviour should work, and no progress. I'm going to close this issue. @tilgovi feel free to keep pestering @nornagon about this if you care. Its his call.
