thanks for having added this algorithm. but i'm afraid you implemented it a little different than aaron barker describes it in his article.
according to his article the sprites should look like this:

|x|
|__x|
|x|

the resulting sprites from your script look like this:
|x____|
|x|
|__x|
|____x|

which only works for icons that will be added to the right hand side of a html element. maybe there should be an alternative like "diagonal-from-right"...
