Is there any way you can mark the static field in your base class as transient or @Transient?

I could, but I think the conclusion in #21 is incorrect. Static fields should not be serialized by default.
The serializable fields of a class can be defined two different ways. Default serializable fields of a class are defined to be the non-transient and non-static fields.

Ah, just the justification I was looking for. Off hand, do you know if Gson serializes statics by default?
