In my application (built on angularjs), this problem seems to be specific to touch devices. Also, if I remove the e.preventDefault(), then this problem is fixed but non-touch devices will trigger the normal click handler of the element when the mouse button is released. Interestingly, the click handler is not triggered on the touch devices. So I can make it work perfectly either on touch devices or non-touch devices but not on both.

I currently use a workaround like following. I have no idea if it works on each and every browser, but it solved the issue for all those browsers which I had at hand: Chrome and Firefox on Win10 (non-touch) and Chrome and Firefox on Android phone.

document.getElementById('button-with-long-press').addEventListener('long-press', function(e) {
	const isTouch = (('ontouchstart' in window) || (navigator.MaxTouchPoints > 0) || (navigator.msMaxTouchPoints > 0));
	if (!isTouch) {
		e.preventDefault();
	}

	console.log(e.target);
});
