@gzussa ahh, thanks for that tip! I'd somehow missed that I could use the agent, but now that I'm thinking about it - it makes perfect sense. Thanks!

Ahh, I just double checked, and it seems that exporting the secret from the running instance using the JCasC runner does indeed encrypt the key, and allow it to be added to VCS without an issue.
Still would be nice to be able to use a secret here.

Thanks for opening this. You can use our plugin with the Datadog Agent as a proxy in order to submit data to your Datadog account. By doing so, you won't have to give API Key to your Jenkins instance at all. Still, I am leaving this issue open for the community to grab. As a side note, we had a similar request on our previous repo. See DataDog/jenkins-datadog-plugin#93
