The problem with this is editing already published posts, you pretty much run into the same problem. I think using a date option in the YAML front matter would be better.

We've been discussing this in Issue #30. At the moment, the best way to do this is overriding date in YAML, as qrush suggested. Here's an example:

date: 2009-05-09 10:08:39 +02:00

This will override the date parsed from the filename.

My fork gets time from the filename (2009-05-09_10-98-my-slug) or from time in the YAML.

I considered using file modification times but after some experimentation it didn't seem like a good idea. Would need some other form of metadata to account for imported old stuff anyway.
