Apt-select should do a bandwidth test about apt-select HOT 1 CLOSED

If you're seeing such a drastic disconnect between lower latency and higher bandwidth, there are a couple of things to consider:

1. If your server is under significant network load, the latency tests apt-select runs may be skewed.
2. Throughput capacity for mirrors can range from 10 Mbps to 10 Gbps. I noticed HEAnet has a 10 Gbps port, whereas many of servers in the Netherlands have a wide range of mirrors with lower bandwidth capacity. apt-select already provides the throughput capacity of the top mirrors, and allows you to choose from that list. e.g. ./apt-select -t 10 -c.

If neither of these are the case, and this happens consistently, I suspect either your ISP has sub-optimal peering with some of the other ISPs in your area, or mirror administrators have set per-user bandwidth QoS policies in order to keep enough free bandwidth for cases with a max number of concurrent users.

Unfortunately, the only way to provide bandwidth measurements to each mirror would be to wrap apt-get/aptitude and use regex to parse stdout for stats. A feature like this would be error prone and would add too much scope and complexity to the program.
