This has proved very challenging to pin down, and I'm going to table it for a bit as I think any "fix" here may not be particularly durable to other changes. It seems like more of a runtime/compilation issue than something structural about the graph being built. Some observations:

  • I can only reproduce the slowdown for the first graph being built.
  • If PQ is removed, I can't reproduce the slowdown for the first graph.
  • If I modify Bench to build the first graph in a hot loop, the builds stay slow.
  • Neither async-profiler nor JFR provide a profile that identifies repeatable slow/hot code in the slow runs.
  • Runs are always slow with jvisualvm sampling.
  • JIT compilation logs don't make a difference in compilation immediately obvious.
