The Akiro mic is the only one we've used in testing--it had solid reviews and fit the bill (i.e., inexpensive, USB-based), so we went with it and were pretty happy with the quality of the hardware.

My guess is that any reasonably good USB mic would do, but I can't attest to the quality of any other mic specifically. In other words: I don't know of any mic in particular that does not work effectively.

The sound cards cited in the Raspberry Pi Verified Peripherals list is also a good resource.

Given the 'adventures' that often come along with USB devices, sound subsystems and linux, it seems prudent to avoid wandering down the path of experimenting with a lot of unknowns. Reading the section on the Pi list does little to convince me otherwise.

Let me ask this another way, what chipset does the Akiro present itself as using? If anything it would seem wise to at least stick with something that loads itself up using the same modules.

Either that or point me to a place to order that mic...

As part of your /root/.asoundrc file, edit the hw:x,y text accordingly.
