This is the great place for such discussion. However, generating controller stubs from existing WSDL can be impossible sometimes. WashOut does not implement complete SOAP as well, it just gives all the basics so you can create a provider for the cases when your potential consumer can't do REST. Therefore I expect such occurrences to meet pretty often. And does it make any sense for simple cases?

Well in my case, some (putting it gently, old-fashioned) 3rd party requires me to implement some interface (defined by a bunch of cumbersome WSDLs) to receive messages from them. I'm trying to figure the easiest way to extract the little data that we need from those messages.

Actually the easiest way you can follow is to publish those WSDL statically (just at your public/) and then go through step-by-step debugging of each method. Got request – got some errors about missing (or excess) parameters. And that's it.

You definitely should not try to make a copy of existing WSDL using WashOut. This is the huge pain of SOAP. There are zillions way of describing same simple stuff. That's the main reason why REST rocks so much.
