For now, I'm going to lean on keeping the API simpler and not adding another level. This opinion is very weakly held. Feel free to comment if anyone else thinks this is essential.

An easy workaround for now is to log with an extra piece of context:

log.Debug("trace fn() in", "trace", 1)

You can then add a custom handler to enable/disable tracing:

nextHandler = log.FilterHandler(func(r *log.Record) bool {
    for i := 0; i < len(r.Ctx); i += 2 {
        // skip all traced messages
        if r.Ctx[i] == "trace" {
            return true
        }
    }
    return false
}, nextHandler)

there isn't at the moment a separate trace level. I typically use Debug like trace though

Thank you for information.

I use Debug when developing and Trace only from time to time when I need really low level logs (and there are A LOT of them).
