While I admit that our current app is pretty ugly, I find Google's style guide to be somewhat absurd. I have never been "enchanted" or "delighted" while using any Android device. If you can make specific recommendations as to how we could could better adhere to Google's style guide and why such adherence would actually lead to a better user experience, that might be more helpful.

I've attached a few (quick) mockups to show what could be done. I borrowed liberally from the G+ app (which you can tell on the second file pretty easily, as I left the icons!).
This would provide most of the functionality of the whole site, while looking much, much better and having a more consistent UI with applications like Google Maps, Gmail, Google+, Google Now, etc.
Functionally, I think this would encourage the app to just load data from the site, rather than essentially loading the webpages as it does right now (which also makes it sluggish).
If I manage to gather time up, I'll see what I can do about actually contributing rather than just commenting, but I need to read up on Android app development.

Cool. At the moment I don't think we have time / resources for UI improvement like this, but if you want to take a stab at it, fork away.

I'm a bit project-slammed myself right now, but I've been wanting to contribute to the OSS community anyway so I'll see what I can do as my schedule frees up.
