I'm voting for a configurable BLOCKSIZE_FLASH.
When using the Cactus Micro Rev2 (github), which uses an ATMEGA32U4 as USB-serial converter, I had esptool hard crash at the 'writing' stage with BLOCKSIZE_FLASH = 0x0400. (Only solution was to physically unplug USB)
When changed to BLOCKSIZE_FLASH = 0x0100 uploading works perfectly (probably a little slower though).
This is the same change that @AprilBrother made to their version of the esptool.py
from esptool-ck.
