Fair, though I'd draw the distinction between the engines key being solely advisory whereas it became a hard/forced change in v0.33.0.

The "engines" tag should be a hard block at runtime in my opinion. It is the only mechanism a package has to communicate version requirements. Node ignoring it like is done today leads to unexpected crashes. :(
