Addressing the question: no, I don't think there's much value on modifying ijson to have it work in non-standard ways.

For your particular problem, you could write a generator that reads data off stdin and yields UTF-8 encoded bytes; then use the generator as the input to ijson.

Thanks for the tip! I'm now doing:

import sys

class StandardInputReader:
    def __init__(self, encoding):
        self.encoding = encoding or 'utf-8'

    def read(self, buf_size):
        data = sys.stdin.buffer.read(buf_size)
        data = data.decode(self.encoding)
        return data.encode('utf-8')

# Later, `encoding` is set and I run:
ijson.common.items(ijson.parse(StandardInputReader(encoding), multiple_values=True), '')
