Oh wow, this is really cool! I really like the design. I personally don't think it's too obtrusive/distracting (because it's shaded quite lightly).
And it's true, I never thought about issues with colorblindness. Definitely an oversight!
Beta and development versions would probably still be relatively similar, but keeping the well-tested modules from the experimental ones would be much improved (and that's what counts).

We might also just move all of the experimental (red) modules down. They are really not at a stage where students can make much use of them, I guess.
