I don't think I want to support undefined as a value, so I'm going to close this.
I stumbled upon the same issue and I was really puzzled about the error. Not supporting undefined values is fair, but the error reporting makes it difficult to track down where it originates from. I thought it was a bug in the SMUI library.

If that did work, it would probably say "undefined" in the field anyway, so I think this should probably be avoided.

Yeah, it would say undefined which made it easy for me to track down. :-) I think here the value is initialized as an object if now passed in so it throws an error with MDC.
