It's because null === null but (() => {}) !== (() => {}). Basically, I want to be able to tell if anything was passed in, so I need something that will never === anything that the user could pass in.

Regarding elevation, I don't want to include all of the Sass for elevation, unless the user explicitly wants it, as in the case of Paper. If the user never imports Paper, then the Sass for all those elevation classes also doesn't get imported.

You could also use NaN !== NaN
