Calling brew command-not-found-init is different from echo "$(brew command-not-found-init)". This is working as expected.

echo doesn't occur anywhere except in your post.

echo shows what the output is when it is called as a subshell.

brew command-not-found-init is not meant to be called directly, because it must run in the current shell context to setup its hook. If you call it that way, it detects it and prints you its help message.

As @reitermarkus wrote, you can see which code is executed by running echo "$(brew command-not-found-init)".
