Seems, that vagrant doesn't support this (correctly). In the working example the box download's source is the real box:
Source: scp://vagrant@myHost:/vagrant/archlinux-x86_64/boxes/archlinux-x86_64_0.1.box
In the non-working example the box download tries to download the json file, which indeed is not a valid box archive:
Source: scp://vagrant@myHost:/vagrant/archlinux-x86_64/archlinux-x86_64.json
I assume reading the json file and hopping to the right download source does not work ssh based.
You may try to ask why in the vagrant-up google group: https://groups.google.com/forum/#!forum/vagrant-up
I am not a vagrant developer though, so I can't give you a satisfying answer on this. Sorry.
