In a system a couple years ago, I added the same feature, the above gist is the code for using zlib to make a stream that a browser will consider valid 'gzip' (there is a surprisingly wide variation in what is considered valid gzipped data, hence the commented out struct.pack at the end, which is part of the spec, but at that time, was often not handled properly by browsers).

I've been testing out my gzip/deflate encoder and things are working well in Chrome, Firefox and curl. This encoder is a module based on garethstokes' module setup, which I've slighty expanded to allow Pre- and Post- modules to handle the Request. The additions are spaced out over a few commits, but I'd be more than happy to get feedback, and maybe others can benefit as well.
