Creating thousands of Items is expensive. The skip() method is the smallest change we found that would allow the code to operate at the volume we needed in production.

Adding support for sorted pagination to DSpace core would have been much more invasive but - when available - this would be a good replacement.

Hi, we don't have any plans to submit issues or patches to JIRA, rather we anticipate that our mods may be picked up as part of the general move of DSpace code to gitub
