I figured it out after studying some other examples found on the web. A little documentation wouldn't be a luxury though :-)

import React, { useEffect, useState, useRef } from 'react';

const listRef = useRef(null);

const goToNext = index => {
    let next = index + 1;
    listRef.current.scrollToIndex({index: next, animated: true})
  }
<View style={styles.content}>
        <SwiperFlatList
          ref={listRef}
          removeClippedSubviews={true}
          initialNumToRender={1}
          data={data}
          autoplay={false}
          autoplayDelay={2}
          autoplayLoop={false}
          // index={2}
          showPagination={false}
          renderItem={({ item, index }) => {
            return (
              <View style={{ width: Dimensions.get("screen").width }}>
                <Text>hello</Text>
                <Button
                  title="next"
                  onPress={() => {
                    () => goToNext(index)
                  }}
                ></Button>
              </View>
            );
          }}
        />
      </View>
