Patterns concerned:

  • .pse4udo
  • .pseudo3s4p

The first of the three must be modified and split:

  • .pse6u1d
  • .psé6u1d

I closed the issue too fast! It remains the question of the 3 words with the diphthong eu:

leucaspis % leu-cas-pis (not le-u-cas-pis)
neurospastos % neu-ros-pas-tos (not ne-u-ros-pas-tos)
pheuxaspidion % pheu-xas-pi-di-on (not phe-u-xas-pi-di-on)

For the moment, I see no other solution than a special pattern for each word.

All the words that do not start leuc have the diphthong eu (the dictionary does not give any quantity for the e or u since the diphthong is always long). However, I dispense with adding the words to the test, they are almost all proper names.

The pattern: .le4uc

For words starting with neur, it is less easy, since there is neuter. We will have to dig deeper into the question.

There are only 2 words beginning with pheu: pheugydros and pheuxaspidion, and both have the diphthong, so no difficulty.

The pattern: .phe4u

from hyphen-la.

fradec avatar fradec commented on May 28, 2024

For words beginning with neu (20 forms), half have the diphthong and start with neur, the other half are derivatives or compounds of neuter and start with neut.

The issue is solved as follow: .ne2ur and .né2ur in place of .ne2ut and .né2ut

But for that, it is necessary to correct the files of previous tests (3 occurrences) which carry neu-ter.

To go further, the words that contain the group 'eu' are about 1500. In the majority of cases, it is the ending in -eus or -eum, there is no difficulty. When the group is in the middle of the word, it is often a diphthong in words of Greek origin. When there is composition, the group is hyphenated as for de-utor.

I found only one homograph: deuteris (from de-utor and deu-ter). I prefer to privilege deutor, because it is the second person of the present tense (the word is not present in the Bible).

Apart from the endings and cases of composition, I look for the recognition of a diphthong by default (at least according to the result, not according to the patterns, unless it allows to develop a smaller number).

Another detail concerns words that start with Eu + vowel, like Euergetes. I have automatically excluded some of the list because ecclesiastical Latin has transcribed the u in v as in euangelium. Here is the list of words concerned:

  • Euæi
  • Euagon
  • Euagoras
  • Euander
  • Euanthes
  • Euanthia
  • Euanthius
  • Euarchus
  • Euathlus
  • euax
  • Euazæ
  • Euelpides
  • Euelpistus
  • Euemerus
  • Euenor
  • Euenos
  • Euergetæ
  • Euergetes
  • euethes
  • Euodia
  • Euœnus
  • Euonymitæ
  • euonymos

I feel that ecclesiastical Latin transcribes each time the u into v, these words can then be treated as Ev-. If this is not the case, the quantity being indicated for these words in the Gaffiot 2016, it would be necessary to hyphenate e-u-, which seems quite weird.

Only the interjection euax might be to keep in e-u-ax. It may be noted among the uncertains in the doc.

It's probably the same for the name Cleuas which would be transcribed in Clevas.

The homograph deuteris can be differentiated by the accented words:

  • deu-ter gives déu-teris
  • de-utor gives de-úteris and de-utéris

So, only the non-accented pattern generates a conflict.

fradec avatar fradec commented on May 28, 2024

All the words with eu are now ok. It should be noted that the test still gives 1 error for the word deuteris, but it should not be taken into account, the accented words are all correctly hyphenated, and the word without accent is hyphenated de-uteris (see the doc).

I think it would be best if the test does not output an error, this will be confusing in the future

Ok, I correct it now.
