Not sure why you're getting the no protocol specified nor the resource unavailable error. I am not expert with Ubuntu and how things are packaged. I am assuming you have the needed dependencies. Are you missing any driver for your hardware? I also don't know if there are differences in how xorg is packaged/configured Ubuntu vs Arch.

Can you try the more simplistic kodi-gbm?

I tried that and it killed my X session/server/everything, had to reboot 🤷‍♂️

Are you trying to run kodi-gbm or kodi-x11 while you have an existing graphical session? If so, that will not work.

Yes.

I'm trying to get this working on Ubuntu, so that I can run Kodi as a headless server on the desktop and use a Chromebook to watch stuff from it, using the web interface.

This works if I manually start Kodi on the desktop and put the window out of the way somewhere, but I'd rather it was running as a headless service.

When I run just run kodi manually, it'll run kodi-x11 and open in a window, so that works fine. I just don't really want the window - I want it to be headless. Is there a way to run Kodi to xvfb or something?

I don't think the web interface allows you to watch anything. I think it is just a remote control to the physical display.

My services here will not give you a headless kodi. They are meant to allow a box to run kodi as the only GUI application. If your goal is to have a kodi server with a shared database, you might find a docker image useful. I believe they can run headless for this purpose. If you don't care about a shared database, I don't see an advantage to going through the trouble. Just serve up content via NFS and be done with it.

No, it can stream content to a web browser too, which is what I want. Maybe I should just use a different media server that just does that and nothing else.

Whether or not it streams isn't the issue. If you want headless kodi, seek out a docker image. https://hub.docker.com/search/?q=kodi&type=image
