You can always trim model. (not only in viewport)
Hard cap is very debatable cus how many splat you need depend what you making.
For large terrains/models you need every splat to have good quality.
For small object/models you usually have enough or more that you need.
But having hard cap and don't have control on what part of model you work you ask only for trouble.
